When I assess that first year with my band, I have to consider it awfully successful. We had played across the U.S. and toured Europe, and I had provided enough work to keep the musicians solvent. We had recorded two records for RCA, the second of which, Lofty Fake Anagram, for release in early 1968. Yet, I myself could barely make ends meet. I had always worked for someone else; now on the other side of the coin, I discovered that with all the expenses of a bandleader, I was ending up with less than I had made as a sideman.

But that’s to be expected in the start-up phase of most new bands, and I tried not to let it distract me. And the work was going far too well for me to look back.
